Brand Ranking:
On this page, we go through the top pre-workout and energy drink brands and give some insights into their brand and formula
-
If you see an ingredient with parentheses next to it, such as:
2g Beta Alanine (3.6g)
This means that their formula has 2g of Beta Alanine, and the most effective recommended dose is 3.6g, or in other words, the formula is short 1.6g of Beta Alanine
-
C4
C4 is one of the most well known pre-workout/energy drink brands in the industry, but unfortunately that has nothing to do with quality
-
From their signature C4 Original, it has:
2g Beta Alanine (3.6)
1.2g L-Citrulline (6g)
1.2g L-Arginine
1g Creatine Nitrate
Caffeine 200mg
Overall this is a VERY weak formula, the main component in any preworkout, L-Citrulline, is short by about 5g or 80% which makes it severely underdosed
The Beta Alanine is short by about 1.2g or ~40%
L-Arginine has no reason to be in the formula as it breaks down before your body can use it. L-Citrulline is the Precursor to L-Arginine, meaning after L-Citrulline gets absorbed it is turned into L-Arginine for your body to use, the issue with directly using L-Arginine is that it is broken down in the stomach before your body is able to absorb any of it
And Lastly, you should never see creatine in a formula, it's a very cheap powder that brands like C4 use as a filler to fill up the tub for cheaper.
Overall, this is one of their worse formulas but all of their formulas are underdosed because most people don't know how to read the label and it's cheaper for them to give you less
Ranking:
3.2 -
BUM (CBUM)
BUM another very popular brand created by 7x Mr.Olympia Christopher Bumstead is... dissapointing, their formulas are very mediocre for the same reason as C4, they make more money by selling you less
-
Cbum Pre-Workout formula Has:
4g L-Citrulline (6g)
3.2g Beta-Alanine (3.6g)
2g L-Tyrosine (2g)
Caffeine 200mg
Better than C4 but overall still underdosed, and its a very basic formula, There is no L-theanine so you will get very jittery from the formula. I would call this the bare minimum to be defined as a pre-workout, its lacking major bloodflow and hydration ingredients and is overall very cheap so they can make more moneyCitrulline is underdosed (60%)
Beta Alanine is slightly underdosed (88%)
Tyrosine a non-essential amino acid that is mainly used to help reduce stress, which is important for expanding your capacity, and it is fully dosed in this formula.
Overall, basically the bare minimum for pre, very underdosed
Note: No artificial dyes or flavors

3.9 -
Alani Nu
Alani is a very recently popular brand that came up for their feminine branding and artwork
_
Alani Nu Preworkout:6g Citrulline Malate (8g)
1.6g Beta Alanine (3.6g)
500mg L-Tyrosine (2g)
200mg Caffeine
200mg L-Theanine
Alani is a good beginner pre-workout, not high in beta alanine, and they have L-Theanine with the caffeine which will get rid of the jitters that normally come with caffeine, their ratios aren't too bad either it's just on the weaker side
Overall, a good pre-workout for beginners, decent formula, the only issue I have is that they have artifical flavors, but overall a pretty trustworthy brand and I would recommend for people in there first 6 months - a year in the gym, I wouldve liked to see some electrolytes in it however.
Ranking:
5.0
(good for beginners, clean formula)

Optimum Nutrition (Gold Standard)
Optimum Nutrition is one of the WORST brands on the market, nearly all of their products are Shockingly terrible.
Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Suplpement Label:3.3g Creatine Monohydrate
1.6g Beta Alanine (3.6g)
750mg Micronized L-Citrulline (6g)385mg L-Tyrosine (2g)
175mg Caffeine
This is a horrible formula, for one it costs them next to nothing to make as their main ingredient is a filler.
Citrulline is underdosed (12% of benefical dosage)
Beta Alanine is underdosed (40%)
Tyrosine is underdosed (19%)
50% of their formula is filler and on top of that they use artificial flavors and food dyes like Red 40, Blue 1, and Yellow 5
They also have a nasty list of preservatives such as Cellulose Gum, Xanthan Gum, Carrageenan, and Calcium Silicate
as for the main ingredient in preworkout, L-Citrulline, Their dosage is 12% of a useful dose, so you would need to take 8 scoops for any benefit from L-Citrulline, on top of that Micronized L-Citrulline is just more finely ground and has no added benefit as they both fully dissolve in water
Overall, Their products are built on buzzwords and fillers and they use an insane amount of dyes, and preservatives.
(Gold standard is just a product name and has nothing to do with real standards and they prey on unknowing consumers)

1.0/10, Would not consume -
Monster
Monster is an energy drink brand, so usually none of their formulas are performance based
Supplement Label:
2g Taurine (2g)
Negligible L-Carnitine
150mg Caffiene
They use L-Cartinine as a Buzzword, when they only have 50mg when the minimum effective dosage is 1 gram, and anything under that has "No measurable differences" So 50mg of L-Cartinine does nothing but allow them to put a buzzword on the can, other than that it's flavored caffeine with preservatives
Overall, It has a lot of preservatives like Sorbic acid, Benzoic Acid and Ester Gum
and it's really just flavored caffeine at the end of the day
Ranking:
2.4/10 (it has good flavoring, thats about it) -
Redbull
In a small can:
29g Sugar
1g Taurine (2g)
80mg Caffeine
They have no L-Theanine so with the sugar and caffeine, you will get jittery and crash pretty hard
As far as the Taurine which is meant to help you focus, the Sodium Bicarbonate will buffer your stomach acid meaning the Taurine won't even be absorbed
The normal cans have 37g of liquid sugar, which is just terrible for you
Overall, redbull is just a bloodsugar spike, it messes with your insulin, forces sugars into your cells, it makes it much harder to lose weight and can contribute to acne.
Ranking:
1.4/10

Transparent Labs
Transparent labs is one of the big brands that does it right, their products are a little more on the expensive side, but the formulas are pretty solid.
Their formula is:
8g Citrulline Malate (8g)
4g Beta Alanine (3.6g+)
2.5g Betaine Anhydrous (3g)
1.3g Taurine (3g)
1g L-Tyrosine (1g)
300mg AlphaSize
200mg Caffeine
200mg L-Theanine
50mg Theobromine
This is something that I would recommend to people as it covers all the major basics of Vasodilation, pH Buffering, Hydration, Nootropics and Stim and Electrolytes. Overall, it has everything you need in a Pre in efficate doses
The difference between Transparent Labs and Crown, is that Crown is stronger.
